An audiovisual concert experience on a gigantic screen during the Mahler Festival 2025
Theater Amsterdam is entering a new phase with a series of high-profile cultural productions. On Saturday, May 10, 2025, at 21:00, the theater will present The Echo of Being, an audiovisual concert experience by Symphonic Cinema. This performance is presented in collaboration with the Royal Concertgebouw as part of the Mahler Festival 2025.
The Echo of Being is inspired by the life and music of Gustav Mahler and explores themes such as life, death, and the afterlife. The film follows the dying process of daughter Maria through the eyes of three family members. Their pain, loss, and love for nature and life are central. The journey to the afterlife is visualized through fractal animations based on musical structure.
Director Lucas van Woerkum, a pioneer of the Symphonic Cinema genre, synchronizes the film live from within the orchestra, creating a unique synergy between music and image.
Leading roles
The leading roles in The Echo of Being are played by:
Greg Wise (Sense and Sensibility, The Crown), as the father facing the imminent loss of his daughter
Amira Casar (Call Me by Your Name), as the mother balancing between hope and sorrow
Dominique van Ginkel, a 15-year-old talent, as the dying daughter Maria
Music by Gustav Mahler. The performance features selected compositions by Gustav Mahler, including parts from his Symphony No. 2, Symphony No. 4, and Symphony No. 9. These works have been specially arranged for chamber orchestra, creating an intimate yet powerful musical experience.
Gigantic screen of Theater Amsterdam and the Mahler Festival
The performance takes place at Theater Amsterdam, which features a 55-meter-wide screen—the largest cinema screen in the Netherlands. This format offers a unique opportunity to present music and film in grand cohesion.
The Echo of Being is part of the Mahler Festival 2025, organized by the Royal Concertgebouw, where Mahler’s music is central to various performances and interpretations.
