The New European Ensemble presents Als ik Luister as part of the Dwarsliggers concert series. A unique fusion of music and storytelling, featuring composers and thinkers who dare to go against the grain.

Psychiatrist, author, and activist Glenn Helberg takes the audience on a journey through the worlds of Julius Eastman, Jalalu-Kalvert Nelson, and Derrick Skye. Helberg connects the motivations and aspirations of these composers to the experiences of people of color in a predominantly white society. He does so through personal stories and insights from his book Als ik luister (2023).

A remarkable evening of music and literature

Jalalu-Kalvert Nelson (*1951) reflects on the history of racism in the U.S. in Jim is Still Crowing, featuring a prominent role for his trumpet.

Derrick Skye (*1982), a composer with roots in Ghana, Nigeria, the UK, and Ireland, explores the blending of cultures in American society in American Mirror. In this piece, even the audience plays an active role.

As host Glenn Helberg weaves together a narrative of intergenerational transmission, identity, and the importance of understanding and respect between cultures.
