New European Ensemble presents an ode to Maurice Ravel, one of the most beloved composers of the 20th century. This Saturday, January 29, you can enjoy live music again in the beautiful Nieuwe Kerk in The Hague.

Ravel synthesised influences from 18th-century French Baroque to early swing jazz in his varied and appealing works. On this program, his work Tombeau de Couperin takes center stage in a new version arranged by the New European Ensemble. The arrangement of Ravel’s Sonatina for piano by harp virtuoso Salzedo is also on the program as well as the groundbreaking Introduction et Allegro for winds, strings and harp.

A new experience
Mikel Urquiza was commissioned by the New European Ensemble to write Ships Vanishing in the Horizon. The work is inspired by the Hendrik Willem Mesdag’s Panorama in The Hague and provides a musical experience of the famous panorama in 10 short movements.
Like Ravel, Urquiza comes from the Basque Country and also makes frequent use of fierce and versatile orchestration. Images of the panorama, which inspired the composer will be shown during the concert. Urquiza and the New European Ensemble create a new in-depth experience inspired by the panorama.
