The New European Ensemble presents the film 1984. The film is based on the eponymous book by George Orwell. Estonian composer Mihkel Kerem wrote a new ensemble piece inspired by the novel, performed by the New European Ensemble in the film. Commissioned by the New European Ensemble, filmmaker Gijs Besseling created a feature film with the New European Ensemble, in which Kerem’s ensemble piece is combined with narrations from Orwell’s novel acted by Boris van der Ham, with commentary by Edward Snowden. Musicians from the ensemble depict the story in compelling film scenes. Recorded in 2020.
The New European Ensemble presents the film Ships Vanishing in the Horizon, an adaptation of the work by the same name by Basque composer Mikel Urquiza. Urquiza visited the Museum Panorama Mesdag in The Hague. He was impressed by the Panorama and saw it as a beautiful source of inspiration for the next composition commissioned by the New European Ensemble. To capture this music piece in film, the ensemble collaborated with the Museum Panorama Mesdag to record images of the composer in the panorama. Recorded in May 2021, Nieuwe Kerk The Hague, Museum Panorama Mesdag.
