Part, pegolesi and harvey
The New European Ensemble believes that new music cannot be separated from tradition and therefore we program concerts where new music and earlier music are imaginatively combined. Although a few eyebrows were raised last year when the combination with Part, Pergolesi/Bach and the Polish composer Henryk Górecki was performed, the public left wildly enthousiastic.
It is a long-standing tradition in the Netherlands. At Easter time we visit en masse concerts with Bach’s St Matthew Passion. Even small villages host one or more performances with the participation of their local choirs. We tend to forget that in our time composers find inspiration in the Passion Week as well.
Around Easter the New European Ensemble presents a viable alternative during a tour in the Netherlands. We play Arvo Pärt’s Stabat Mater from 1985 and the setting of the same poem that Pergolesi completed 250 years earlier. Two pieces with the same theme and the same words, but almost 250 years apart.
New European Ensemble is supported by Fonds Podiumkunsten (from 2017) and the city of The Hague
