about the programme
den haag nieuwe kerk
Two Stabat Maters. Pergolesi’s version, a baroque opera in disguise, and Arvo Pärt’s introspective, profoundly moving setting of the same text.
There is a long-standing tradition in the Netherlands of attending performances of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion around Easter. Even small towns host one or more performances with the participation of their local choirs. We often forget that also in our own time numerous composers have written masterworks that are inspired by the Holy Week.
This Easter we will perform Arvo Pärt’s Stabat Mater from 1985 and the setting of the same poem that Pergolesi performed in 1735. We present this masterpiece with the extra viola part that Bach has composed to make Pergolesi’s score even richer.
We combine it with Henryk Górecki’s expressive Genesis, one of the most challenging pieces ever written for string trio.
New European Ensemble is supported by Fonds Podiumkunsten (from 2017) and the city of The Hague
