about the programme

Paul Ben Haim wrote his Serenade for flute and string trio in 1964 looking back on the classical forms of Mozart’s famous flute quartets and infusing them with the Arabic and Jewish traditional music of his native Israel. Aaron Copland wrote his two Threnodies in memory of his friends Beatrice Cunnigham and Igor Stravinsky. Jennifer Higdon’s virtuoso piece Rapid Fire for flute portrays the chaos of an inner city gun-fight in America. The American composer Jeffrey Mumford writes evocative music inspired by his country’s rich natural beauty.

New European Ensemble is supported by Fonds Podiumkunsten (from 2017) and the city of The Hague
