ostade a’dam

The Spanish writer and Noble Prize winner Juan Ramón Jiménez published Platero and I in 1914. It is a wonderful series of stories about an Andalusian villager who experiences adventures with his donkey Platero. It is a touching masterpiece, for children and grownups as well. The little donkey symbolizes tenderness, purity and open-minded naivety. His master loves him so much that he tries to perceive the world through the eyes of his donkey.

Jiménez was forced by the nazis to flee Spain. Similarly the Jewish composer Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco had to escape from his homeland. Platero and I inspired him to compose a cycle of pieces for the world famous guitar player Andrés Segovia. They can be performed solo or, like in this salon, as an accompaniment to Jiménez’s poetic texts.
