about the festival
The first Dutch Edition of Oriental Landscapes will take place from 16 to 23 June 2017 in five cities across the Netherlands. Concerts in Amsterdam (Bimhuis), Utrecht (Tivoli Vredenburg), The Hague (Paard van Troje and Korzo Theater), Rotterdam (Podium Grounds) and Leiden (Rijksmuseum van Oudheden) will bring contemporary oriental music to audiences in all 5 cities.
Some of the world’s leading musicians from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, such as Dima Orsho (SY/US), Kinan Azmeh (SY/US), Jasser Haj Youseef (TN/FR), Nizar Rohana (PS/NL), The Nouri Iskandar Trio (SY/GR) and Mirna Kassis (SY/IT) will play at the festival. There will be premieres and performances of compositions by Zaid Jabri, Shafi Badreddin, Kinan Azmeh and Dima Orsho together with new pieces by the Utrecht-based composer and clarinetist Steven Kamperman and Amsterdam-based violist/composer Oene van Geel. Oriental landscapes will feature the European premiere of Aleppo Songs by the contemporary Syrian composer Kareem Roustom.
about the concerts
The opening concert of the festival will take place at Paard van Troje in The Hague on June 16. New European Ensemble, Dima Orsho, Kinan Azmeh and Nizar Rohana will present a new and diverse program. The concert will include compositions by contemporary Syrian composers as well as a new compositions from the Netherlands. Steven Kamperman has written a work on the lyrics of the great Sufi poet Al-Niffari (Egypt 965) for Syrian mezzo-soprano Dima Orsho. Oene van Geel has composed a concerto for Palestenian oud player Nizar Rohana and flutist Felicia van den End. The New European Ensemble will team up with an ensemble from the Royal Conservatory of the Hague for this concert. This program is repeated in Utrecht and Amsterdam.
