about the programme
Martijn Padding is one of the most engaging creative minds in contemporary music. As head of the composition department of the Royal Conservatory he is a key figure in The Hague’s internationally renowned new music scene.
In Festival Dag in de Branding Martijn Padding will receive the prestigious Johan Wagenaar Award for his diverse and colourful oeuvre. We look forward to performing three brilliant solo concerti by Padding, who has substantially reworked two of his pieces for the occasion.
Martijn Padding is a master par excellence in the genre of the solo concerto, which challenges him to playfully turn traditions on their head. He regards the soloists as his allies and writes his concertos for musicians he knows well and enjoys working with. By involving the musicians in the creative process he can compose solo-parts that fit them like a glove.
New European Ensemble is supported by Fonds Podiumkunsten (from 2017) and the city of The Hague
