When the Emperor of Atlantis declares a holy war in which everyone is required to fight, death rebels against him and makes it impossible for anyone to die. The only way to change this course of events is for the emperor to sacrifice himself and die a natural death himself.

Der Kaiser von Atlantis was created in the Theresienstadt concentration camp during the second world war. Composer Viktor Ullmann and librettist Peter Kien worked on the opera together. By March 1944 all of the creators of the opera had been transported to Auschwitz and killed. In 1975 the opera was premiered by the Netherlands Opera in the Bellevue Theater in Amsterdam. Director Robin Coops and Foundation M31 have put together a new production of the opera together with the Netherlands Reisopera, New European Ensemble and Theater na de Dam. The new production promises a modern setting for a story very relevant to today’s political realities. Robin Coops has brought together a team of veteran singers and exciting and talented young professionals for the production.

New European Ensemble is supported by Fonds Podiumkunsten (from 2017) and the city of The Hague
