claude debussy (1862-1918)

In 2018 is it a hundred years ago since the French composer Claude Debussy died. The pieces you will hear tonight are by Debussy himself, and by two composers who were influenced by his music. Special attention is given to the flute this evening. Debussy is famous for inventing new sounds in his music. Before he came to his new inventions he was still far more influenced by romanticism, and that is very noticeable in his earlier works. The later sonata for flute and the Six épigraphes antiques are a whole different style, and much more Impressionist works.

Claude Debussy - Deux arabesques (bew. Henk Alkema)

Claude Debussy - Sonata for flute, viola and harp

Kaija Saariaho - Terrestre

Claude Debussy - Six épigraphes antiques (bew. Karl Lenski)

Toru Takemitsu - And then I knew it was wind (1992)
