guadeamus music week

The New European Ensemble returns to Gaudeamus Muziekweek in a varied programme of works exploring nature, tranquillity, light and dark and our experience of sound.

Stefan Maier’s Territories, nominated for the Gaudeamus Award 2019, is a reply to Glenn Gould’s documentary The Idea of North about the north of Canada. In contrast of Gould’s love for technology, Maier creates a sumptuous sonic picture of the Antropocene, the periode of time in which humans have made indellible traces on the landscape.

Peter Adriaansz has written a new work for New European Ensemble that delves into our experience of continuing overlapping ostinato (repetitive short musical motives). He reflects on how layers of sound interact. José Sanchez Verdu examines the interaction and interplay of light, dark, religion and reason, in a piece inspired by Goya’s ink drawings Lux ex Tenebris of an angel emerging from darkness.

Gaudeamus presents, organises, stimulates and supports the newest music by young music pioneers. For 70 years Gaudeamus has worked hard to provide music pioneers worldwide with a stage and to bring the music of tomorrow to curious music lovers. It is impossible to imagine today’s international world of (new) music without Gaudeamus.
