70 years of Johan Wagenaar foundation
JOhan wagenaar foundation
The Dag in de Branding Festival is organized by the Johan Wagenaar Foundation, an organization which aims at stimulating the development of new music. The Johan Wagenaar Stichting (JWS) was founded in 1947 and from the outset it had a policy of giving composers pride of place. The organization has commissioned numerous compositions and granted composition awards.
This edition is one huge celebration: not only the 70th special anniversary of the Johan Wagenaar Foundation, but also the Matthijs Vermeulen Award being presented to Kate Moore (1979) and Hugo Morales receiving the Willem Pijper Award (1979). It goes without saying that music by these newly honoured composers will be heard, but the day will particularly look back at seventy years of Dutch composition, to which the Johan Wagenaar Foundation has made a considerable contribution through its active commissioning policy. The New European Ensemble will perform a selection of music from the archives and play a new piece by Cees van Zeeland.
