Bas clarinettist Ryane Hofman ane pianist Hanna Shybayeva perform a concert dedicated to Piet Mondriaan and the art movement ‘De Stijl’ founded in 1917. Mondriaan loved music. His reputation as an innovator in art was connected with his musical taste. In the 1920’s he heard Stravinsky’s music in Paris while in the 40’s he was deeply engaged by Thelonius Monk’s bebop. In 1913 Mondriaan moved away from figurative to abstract art. He experimented with connecting art forms together and asked the composer Jakob van Domselaer to write music connected to his art. The Dutch composer Jos Pommer wrote a work dedicated to Mondriaan for bass clarinet and piano inspired by the artists’s abstract work and his love of jazz.

New European Ensemble is supported by Fonds Podiumkunsten (from 2017) and the city of The Hague
